Louis Goldstein (1859-1923) and Rose Hecklin Goldstein (1865-1944) immigrated from Russia to New York in 1888 and 1891, respectively. A shoemaker by trade, Louis established his own store, Louis Goldstein, in Greenville by 1912. His son, Abraham “Abe” Goldstein (1898-1959), initially worked as a clerk before establishing Sample Shoe Company about 1918. Louis subsequently clerked in his son’s store until 1923. Abe Goldstein moved to Spartanburg by 1924, where he married Minna Goldstein (1906-1966) and opened Broadway Shoe Store.
