In 1933, The Tavern, a restaurant and bar owned and operated by Julian Schwartz (1893-1969), sold draught beer, the first time since pre-prohibition that draught beer was sold in Sumter, South Carolina.1 Besides alcohol, The Tavern served sandwiches. In addition to The Tavern, Schwartz also owned and operated Schartz Ready-to-Wear, a ladies’ clothing store in Sumter.
