In 1930, Mary Bellin Alpert (1887-1960), and her children Maxie (1909-1993) and Fannie (1908-1988), founded Ladies’ ready-to-wear store Alpert’s in Sumter, South Carolina. Located in the former store of Mary’s deceased husband, Louis Alpert (1874-1922), at 6 North Main Street, Alpert’s served as the headquarters for women’s fashion in Sumter for over thirty years. Fannie remained part of the business until 1938, when she married Kingstree clothing merchant Isadore Goldstein (1909-1991). After Mary’s death in 1960, Maxie continued the business until he closed it in 1963.
