Lewenthal & Hennig was established on January 2, 1890, and was dissolved on the first of January the following year. Partners Samuel Lewenthal and Henry Hennig (1858-1922) were both independently engaged in Darlington’s mercantile industry before opening the grocery and liquor store on the corner of Pearl Street and the Public Square.
Samuel Lewenthal was likely born in modern-day Poland around 1858. He moved to Darlington in 1879 and clerked for his brother Isaac at S. Marco & Lewenthal before joining Henry Hennig in business. Henry was born in Neumark, Prussia—or modern-day Poland. He immigrated to New York in 1882 and then moved south to Darlington less than two years later. Following the dissolution of Lewenthal & Hennig, he opened another grocery and liquor store under his name on Pearl Street and married Lena Witcover (1875-1960) in 1894.
