Merchant
1922-1951

58 Washington Street
Walterboro, SC 29488

FAMILIES: Bogoslow

Philip Bogoslow (1888-1952) was born in Russia to Isadore (d. 1903) and Tillie Barth Bogoslow (1871-1947) and immigrated to New York via Montreal, Canada, in 1905. In the early 1910s, Philip moved to Colleton Couty, South Carolina, where he married Yettie Sobel (1888-1979) in 1913 and co-founded Sobel & Bogoslow with I. Sobel—likely his brother-in-law, Isidore Sobel (1892-1972)—in Walterboro the same year. Shortly after Isidore married Anna Brown (1897-1948) in 1918, Isidore returned to New York to live with Anna’s family. In 1919, Philip announced the dissolution of the business partnership and established Philip Bogoslow at 42 Main Street, or the Glover block. He operated a textile store at the location with the tagline “where the dollar does it’s duty” until briefly moving to Albemarle, North Carolina, in 1920.1

Returning to Walterboro in 1922, Philip opened a stand in B. Levy’s store while he built a new shop at 58 Washington Street, known then as the Padgett block. In November 1922, he announced the grand opening of Philip Bogoslow’s Bargain Store, which featured dry goods, clothing, shoes, and home furnishings. Philip managed the store with Yettie until April 1951 when his failing health necessitated the sale of the store. In December 1951, Philip and Yettie announced that they would open a new shop at B. Levy’s on Lucas Street following renovations. However, Philip passed away six months later.
