Sobel & Bogoslow

Sobel & Bogoslow was likely established by brothers-in-law Isidore Sobel (1892-1972) and Philip Bogoslow (1888-1952). Both Isidore and Philip immigrated to New York as teens and moved to Colleton County, South Carolina, as young adults. Before opening Sobel & Bogoslow, Isidore established the Walterboro branch of Frank’s Charleston Surprise Bargain Clothing & Shoe Store for fellow Hungarian native and Sobel family relative, Jacob Frank (1879-1963).

In 1913, Jacob closed his headquarters in Charleston, Philip married Yettie Sobel (1888-1979), and Isidore and Philip co-founded Sobel & Bogoslow in Walterboro. There, Isidore and Philip sold men’s and women’s clothing before parting ways in 1919. At that time, Isidore moved back to New York with his wife, Anna Brown (1897-1948), and Philip established Philip Bogoslow at 42 Main Street.
