Around 1910, Hungarian immigrant Jacob Frank (1879-1963) established a dry goods store in his name at 570 King Street in Charleston. Around the same time, he likely hired fellow Hungarian native and relative Isidore Sobel (1892-1972) to manage a branch of the store in Walterboro. Known as Frank’s Charleston Surprise Bargain Clothing & Shoe Store, the regional shop operated on Walter Street and featured clothing and novelty goods for the whole family. In 1913, Jacob left Charleston for Walterboro to establish J. Frank’s, and Isidore began a local business venture with his brother-in-law, Philip Bogoslow (1888-1952).
