FAMILIES: Wineman

Philip Wineman Jr. (1854-1942) was raised in Charleston’s wholesale pharmacy industry and likely assisted his father, Dr. Philip Wineman (1826-1895), at Philip Wineman & Co.  as a young adult. In the 1880s, he attempted to make a name for himself in Jacksonville, Florida, before returning to Charleston. A year after his father’s death, Philip opened Wineman’s Pharmacy on the corners of Rutledge Avenue and Doughty Street. He left the management of the store to Benjamin A. Graman (1875-1922) for a time before closing the business around 1901and eventually returning to Jacksonville.
