FAMILIES: Nachman

According to a nineteenth-century article in the Darlington News, A. Nachman immigrated to the United States from Germany around 1839. After living in Charleston for several years, he moved to Darlington in 1854 and opened the general merchandise store, Hymes & Nachman, with English immigrant, Hyam Hymes (1833-1907). Two years later, Nachman and Hymes parted ways, and Nachman operated another store in Darlington until 1862. After a sojourn in Europe, he returned to Charleston where he established both Nachman & Co. and Nachman & Has. In 1877, Nachman returned to Darlington where he opened a business in his name opposite the Enterprise Hotel—formerly located at 40 Public Square. There, he sold dry goods, groceries, clothing, and furnishings, some of which he purchased on his yearly buying trips to Paris. In addition to the income generated from his stores, Nachman also made his fortune extending loans through the “lien plan” and selling cotton and fertilizer. He also served on the Bank of Darlington’s board of directors throughout the 1890s.
