Joseph Solomons

Merchant
c.1775-c.1805

King Street
Charleston, SC

FAMILIES: Solomons

Born in Amsterdam, Joseph Solomons (d. 1808) migrated to Charleston in the mid-1770s and lived there with his wife Judith “Juddy” (d. 1815) and their children Aaron, Solomon (1784-1836), and Rachael for approximately 30 years. According to the 1790 census, Joseph and his family enslaved four people, and in 1803, he was listed in the city directory as a shopkeeper at 185 King Street. His grandson and namesake, Joseph Solomons (1808-1831)—born to Solomon and his wife Alice Abrahams Solomons (d. 1839)—later followed in his grandfather’s footsteps and operated a store on the west side of King Street between Radcliff and Mary streets.
