Sidney Lewis (1918-1975) was born in New York to Irving Lewis and Dora Boyarsky Lewis. Around 1944, Sidney married Dorothy Levy (1921-2005) and together they had two children, Daniel Gerald Lewis (1947-2000) and Robin Sue Lewis (1952-2015), both of whom were born in Brooklyn, New York. In 1953, while still living in New York, Sidney began construction of his manufacturing plant on Jones Avenue in Marion, South Carolina. After completion, Sidney and his family moved to Marion to run the plant. The company, which was called Lewco Mills, produced men’s swimwear and boxers. Dorothy Levy’s brother, Herbert S. Levy may have been involved in Lewco Mills, in addition to running his own manufacturing plant (Herbert Mills) in Marion. Sometime in the mid-1960s to early 1970s the name of Lewco Mills was changed to Sun Fun Sportswear. After Sidney’s death in 1975, Dorothy and Daniel continued to operate Sun Fun Sportswear until its closing in 1995.
