FAMILIES: Keyserling

In 1889, Joseph Keyserling (1865-c.1920) immigrated to the United States from Russia. After he settled in Beaufort, Keyserling managed the MacDonald-Wilkins Company’s store in Dale. Soon thereafter, Keyserling moved to Beaufort to run the MacDonald-Wilkins store there. Keyserling’s younger brother, Israel Keyserling (1876-1965), with the assistance of his son, William King Keyserling (1911-1968), and daughter-in-law, Polly Keyserling (1916-1998), acquired the store at Dale and renamed it I. Keyserling & Son. The store included a post office inside.

The Jewish Merchant Project is supported by the generosity of the Henry & Sylvia Yaschik Foundation and the Stanley B. Farbstein Endowment at the Coastal Community Foundation.
