Merchant
c.1878-1918

King Street
Charleston, SC

FAMILIES: Friedburg

Marks Friedburg (1849-1918) was born in Poland and immigrated to the United States between 1865 and 1870. Marks and his wife Fannie Jacobosky (1857-1927) married sometime in the 1870s and had four children together. In 1878, Marks was in the dry goods and clothing business at 487 King Street where he remained until at least 1893. In the mid-1880s the store address shifted from 487 to 423 King Street, although the physical location of the business did not change. Marks continued in the general merchandise business until 1916, at which point the Charleston city directory lists him as the manager of I. Friedburg, likely named after his son Israel Friedburg (1883-1963). Marks passed away in 1918 at the age of 69.
