FAMILIES: Reinstein

Reinstein Brothers was a dry goods store established by widow Regina Sondhelm Reinstein (1850-1943) and three of her children: Sallie Reinstein Nachman (1875-1956), David (1878-1950), and Nathan (1882-1954). Born in Bavaria, Regina married fellow German-native Louis Reinstein (c.1826-1905) in 1872. Together, they raised several children in Ridgeland, South Carolina where Louis operated a general merchandise store. After his death, Regina and at least three of her children moved to Charleston and began operating Reinstein Brothers at 78 King Street by 1918.  She retired some time before 1930, and her children closed the store—then located at 145 King Street—around 1933. In their retirement, David, Nathan, and Sallie invested in local real estate, purchasing lots on Church Street, Ashley Avenue, and East Bay Street, among others.
