Stotsky Brothers

Merchant
c.1917-1928

Saluda, SC

FAMILIES: Stotsky

Stotsky Brothers was established by Nathan (1887-1969) and Max Stotsky (1899-1964) around 1917. Born in present-day Vilnius, Lithuania, Nathan and Max immigrated to the United States at a young age. Sometime after 1911, Nathan joined his cousin, Nathan Bass (1886-1958), in business and operated a branch of N. Bass & Company in Saluda. While details surrounding the latter are sparse, Nathan Stotsky likely left his cousin’s business to open Stotsky Brothers with Max.

In 1924, Nathan and Max announced the opening of a second Stotsky Brothers location in Newberry, which they referred to as “The Outlet,” in contrast to their original store in Saluda, which they began to call “The Boston Store.” At both locations, they sold clothing and other dry goods before filing for bankruptcy in 1928. After dissolving the business, Nathan and his wife Gussie Cohen Stotsky (1893-1955) remained in Saluda until the early 1940s. After that, Nathan began to work as salesman in a Greenville cigar shop and later died in Pennsylvania with Max’s family.
