In 1920, an article in Orangeburg newspaper The Times and Democrat listed Jake Pliskin as one of the town’s Jewish merchants who donated to the creation of a “South Carolina Memorial.”1 According to the 1920 Census, he immigrated to the United States from Russia in 1913, and was living in Orangeburg with his wife, Rose, who immigrated to the United States from Russia in 1908, and son, Aron, who was born in New York. Pliskin worked as a dry goods merchant in Orangeburg through at least 1920. By 1940, however, the family moved to Davidson, North Carolina, where Pliskin opened a dry goods store.
