A.J. & P. Moses

Merchant
1848-1852

Sumter, SC

FAMILIES: Moses

From 1848 to 1852, South Carolina native Andrew Jackson Moses (1815-1877) operated a general merchandise business, A.J. & P. Moses, with Perry Moses in Sumter, South Carolina. It remains unclear whether this Perry Moses was A. J. Moses’s son, Perry J. Moses (1844-1916), who would have only been four years old at the time the business opened, or perhaps a Perry Moses recorded as living in Charleston in 1840. The business sold a wide variety of goods, including crockery, dry goods, groceries, and hardware. Besides his involvement with A.J. & P. Moses, A. J. Moses worked as one of Sumter’s most successful merchants from around 1935 until his death in 1877.
