Merchant
c.1915-c.1935

Marion, SC

FAMILIES: Finger

Morris Finger (1870-1955) immigrated to the United States from Russia with his parents in 1886. He later married fellow Russian immigrant Sarah Pliskin (1880-1987) and started a family in Orangeburg. After operating a men’s haberdashery store in the Garden City, Morris moved to Marion with his family in the 1910s. At the time, Marion County’s local economy was still closely tied to the tobacco industry, cotton and lumber mills, and bottling companies. Shortly after Morris settled in the rural community, he opened a general store which he operated into the 1930s. With their children fully grown, Morris and Sarah later moved to Dillon County where Morris opened another dry goods store.
