FAMILIES: Triber

Rebecca “Becky” Silverman Raichlin Triber (1895-1949) immigrated from Romania to Canada with her parents and five siblings around 1903. Six days before turning nineteen, Becky married Nathan Nochum Raichlin (1889-1918) in Montreal, Quebec. Becky gave birth to a daughter, Jennie (1917-2012), shortly before Nathan died during the influenza pandemic of 1918. In March 1919, Becky married widower and fellow Eastern European immigrant Charles “Charlie” Triber (1884-1948) in Quebec. Charlie brought a daughter of his own to the marriage, and the next year, the newlywed couple welcomed a son, Abraham (1920-1923). Together, the family of five moved to Florence, South Carolina in 1922. Within the span of two years, little Abraham passed away and Becky gave birth to another son, Harry (1924-1994). While caring for her family in a new country, Becky also joined her husband in a business venture.

In 1930 one of Columbia’s daily newspapers, The State, reported that Becky and Charlie took out a charter on the Economy Shoe Store, Inc. where Becky served as president and secretary of the shop and Charlie acted as vice-president and treasurer. By the end of the decade, the Tribers either established a new business or changed the name of the store as Charlie was operating Triber’s Shoe Shop at 155 North Dargan Street by 1940. At that point, Becky was listed in the federal census as the owner of a secondhand clothing store in Florence.

Becky died of a coronary embolism in May 1949, less than a year after Charlie’s death by suicide in August 1948. Becky appears to have retired from her clothing store before her death.
