Isaac Israel Garfinkel (1883-1957) was born in Romania in 1883, less than a decade after the country gain independence from the Ottoman Empire. He immigrated to the United States in 1904 and spent decades in the Northeast, operating a suit and cloak house and a cleaning and drying store in New Jersey and New York respectively. He married fellow Romanian immigrant, Rebecca Hurst (1887-1970) in 1910 and together the couple had two daughters: Sylvia (1911-2001) and Muriel (1917-2002). Isaac and Rebecca moved to Dillon, South Carolina after Sylvia married Dillon native Harry Fass (1907-1985) in 1938. In Dillon, Isaac owned a ladies dress shop which he operated until 1956.
