FAMILIES: Levy

As a young man, Julian Levy Jr. (1884-1960) worked in his father’s retail grocery store Levy & Moses in Sumter, South Carolina. Following the death of Julian Levy Sr. (1843-1916), Julian Levy Jr. continued in the grocery business until around 1931, when he opened the restaurant Julian’s at 106-108 North Main Street in downtown Sumter. Julian’s remained in operation until 1945. Outside of his mercantile activities, Julian was a member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks and the Temple Sinai Men’s Club, served as president of Temple Sinai, and was active in the local community theater.

The Jewish Merchant Project is supported by the generosity of the Henry & Sylvia Yaschik Foundation and the Stanley B. Farbstein Endowment at the Coastal Community Foundation.
