Born in Brooklyn, New York, Samuel “Sam” C. Greenly (1917-2005) graduated as valedictorian from Upsala College in East Orange, New Jersey, and earned a Master in Letters from the University of Pittsburgh. During World War II, Greenly served in the U.S. Army. While in the army, Greenly met and married Lucille Schoenberg (1919-2010) of Beaufort. Following the war, Greenly moved to Beaufort with his wife and became the owner-manager of L. Schoenberg & Son Building Supply Company. Greenly went on to become a Distinguished Professor Emeritus at the University of South Carolina, Beaufort, serve on the Beaufort City Council, and serve as the President of the Beth Israel Congregation.
