FAMILIES: Strauss

During the 1910s, Lucian Ira Strauss (1885-1950), the son of German immigrant Alfred Abraham Strauss (1841-1925) and South Carolina native Blanche Baer Strauss (1887-1890), operated a grocery store in Sumter, South Carolina. By 1916, Strauss was working as a life insurance agent in Sumter for The State Life Insurance Co. of Indianapolis, Indiana. After serving in World War I, Strauss moved to Chicago, Illinois, where he worked as a wholesale merchant. By 1930, he had moved to Greensboro, North Carolina, where he manufactured and sold pea harvesters. In 1939, Strauss married Grace Harriet Hansen (1896-1985).
