FAMILIES: Nussbaum

After the death of Bernard “Bernie” Nussbaum (1882-1940), founder of B. Nussbaum and Son, the largest department store in Branchville, his son, J. Philip Nussbaum assumed manager. The store incorporated as Nussbaum’s Department Store, primarily stocked with casual and fine clothing for the whole family. In late 1983, the Times and Democrat newspaper of Orangeburg advertised Nussbaum’s inventory and property for sale. By the end of the next year, Nussbaum’s held its final closing sale, ending the Nussbaum family store in Branchville after more than 70 years in business.
