FAMILIES: Schwartz

In 1887, brothers Isaac (1863-1929) and Charles Schwartz (1867-1954) founded clothier and dry goods store Schwartz Bros. in Sumter, South Carolina. Schwartz Bros. was a true family business. Family members involved included Isaac’s and Charles’s sister, Emma Schwartz (1859-1932), and Isaac’s son, Julian (1893-1969). Schwartz Bros. closed in August 1929, a few months after Isaac’s death. To stock the store, Schwartz family members made buying trips to northern port cities, such as New York and Baltimore. In addition to clothes and dry goods, Schwartz Bros. dealt in cotton, buying the crop from local farmers and then reselling it for a higher price.
