In 1950, Alex Becker, son of prominent Orangeburg merchant Harry A. Becker (1898-1981) and Sadie Bernstein Becker (1898-1975), joined Ben Benjamin to found United Outlet Stores. Short-lived, the business dealt in assorted hardware, shoes, apparel, utensils, farm supplies, appliances, and army surplus goods. About four months after it opened, Becker backed out of the business.
