John Levin (1846-c.1905) immigrated to the United States from Russia in 1866. After he arrived in the United States, Levin worked as a clothier in Charleston. In 1881, Levin married Gretta Esther (1856-1922), who immigrated to the United States from Russia that same year. Sometime after his marriage, Levin opened a dry goods and clothing store in Beaufort. After Levin’s death around 1905, Gretta continued to run the store until around the time of her death in 1922.
