In 1920, an article in Orangeburg newspaper The Times and Democrat listed New York native Philip H. Levy as one of the town’s Jewish merchants who donated to the creation of a “South Carolina Memorial.”1 Levy lived in Orangeburg as early as 1917 and as late as 1928. According to the 1920 Census, Levy dealt in dry goods.
