Village Square

Merchant
c.1955-c.1995

Main Street
Latta, SC

FAMILIES: Epstein

Village Square was established by Nathan (1913-1998) and Evelyn Steinberg Epstein (1911-1988). North Carolinian Nathan and New Jersey native Evelyn married in New York in 1936 and later set down roots in Dillon County, South Carolina. After successfully running a furniture store known as Ideal Furniture Co., Nathan and Evelyn opened Village Square, an upscale clothing store located on Main Street in Latta. Those who remember Village Square may recall shoppers lining up around the block for the store’s after-Christmas sale. Nathan retired from the business before his death in 1998.
